Athletes compete in 37 sports during the Summer Olympics, which will be held in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8, 2021. For the first time in history, the Olympic program includes karate, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing. We present all the disciplines of the Tokyo Games.
Initially, the Olympic Games in Tokyo were scheduled to start on July 24, 2020, but four months before they began, the International Olympic Committee and hosts announced a postponement, for the first time in the history of the most important competition of the four years. The coronavirus pandemic was to blame for everything. The Olympic has started in 2021.
The players will compete in 339 events in 37 sports, which will include: badminton, baseball, boxing, gymnastics, golf, field hockey, horse riding, judo, canoeing, karate, cycling, basketball, athletics, archery, modern pentathlon, soccer, handball, water polo, swimming, synchronized swimming, weightlifting, rugby 7, volleyball, skateboarding, diving, softball, surfing, shooting, fencing, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, rowing, sport climbing , wrestling and sailing.
Tokyo 2020: games with new disciplines
Karate, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing are the disciplines that made it to the program of the Olympic Games for the first time in history. Baseball, which was last hosted at this event in 2008 in Beijing, returned to the Olympics.
However, new competitions of the already existing disciplines have appeared. These are: 3×3 basketball, swimming – 800m men, 1500m women, 4x100m mixed relay medley, archery – mixed teams, track and field – 4x400m mixed relay, BMX cycling – freestyle, track cycling – women’s and men’s madison, judo – mixed teams, table tennis – mixed and triathlon – mixed relay.
Let’s take a look at selected disciplines:
BOX
Boxing is one of the oldest Olympic disciplines, not only when it comes to the games of the modern era. The first Olympic boxing tournament was held in 1904 in St. Louis.
SKATEBOARD
Skateboarding debuted in the program of the Games, i.e. skateboarding, gained great popularity in the 90s of the last century in reference to street and youth culture. In Tokyo, the competition will take place in two competitions – park and street.
ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS
Artistic gymnastics is performed only by women. It derives partly from the sports version of this discipline (both are supervised by the same organization: the International Gymnastic Federation – FIG), but it does not have such a rich Olympic tradition.
Apart from individual competitions, there are also team competitions. Teams of five players present two exercises – one with ribbons, the other connected – with three pairs of clubs and two hoops. For years, players from Central and Eastern Europe have dominated.
GOLF
60 golfers and 60 female golfers will compete in the Olympic tournament in Tokyo. This discipline returned to the 2016 program in Rio de Janeiro after a 114-year hiatus.
GRASS HOCKEY
Field hockey for men appeared on the program of the 1908 Olympics in London and – with a break in 1912 – is present there to this day. Women made their debut only in 1980 in Moscow.
